Ms. Josephine Guiao, Health Education Promotion Officer III of the National Center for Health Promotion of the Department of Health. Joel Javellana, Admin Officer III, Amparo Mamaril, Supply Officer III, Melita Castillo, Nutritionist Dietician IV are now in Dagupan conducting inspections and monitoring in the implementation of the Salt Iodization Program as Mandated by RA 8172 or the ASIN Law. The Acting Mayor was interviewed on his knowledge of the ASIN Law. They likewise tested the Acting Mayor on his basic knowledge on why there is a need to iodize salt. The Acting mayor simply stated that a human beings thyroid glands are very much a participant in the development of the brain and nervous system and physical growth of the human body. Iodine is one such mineral that helps in the smooth operation of our thyroid glands to help secrete iodine and other chemicals that shall be aiding in the mental development of a person. The minimum requirement set forth is about 100 parts of iodine for every one million parts of salt. If it shall be translated in the cost of iodizing salt, it is neglible. If it shall be measured on the change of taste of salt with the introduction of iodine in the salt, it is likewise neglible. Therefore the best way in supplementing the body's need for iodine is through salt iodization. The city has been a one hundred percenter when it comes to the SIP or Salt iodization Program. Former Councilor Fausto Cuison authored an ordinance in 2002 adopting the ASIN Law, to make sure that all efforts in its implementation are fully enforced in the city. Public markets, supermarkets, groceries, restaurants are randomly inspected for iodine content of salt. Potassium Iodate is the usual chemical solution used to check for iodized salt. Once dropped to the salt, it turns purple. The darker the shade, the more concentration of iodine is shown.
