Impeachment

TV Patrol field reporter Mae Viray recently interviewed the Acting Mayor as regards to his opinion on the impeachment proceedings at the lower house of congress where majority of the peoples representatives voted to dismiss the impeachment complaint filed by Oliver Lozano. Earlier, filipinos were shocked to see the throwing of documents and walk out of pro-impeachment congressmen. These congressmen felt they were not being heard on their request that the house consider a second complaint filed in congress, which they say has more substance. The thing is according to their rules, only one impeachment complaint could be accommodated per year. Watching the proceedings from television, one could have an objective opinion on the matter since the coverage was uninterruped and unedited. It was a sad sight to see that some congressmen refused to acknowledge that in a democracy, it shall be the opinion of the majority that shall prevail. They should realize that they have a seat in congress because they were able to get the majority vote in their areas of jurisdiction. The opponents they faced during the last election could be better than them, more competent than them. The reality is, in a democracy, whoever has the majority wins. That is the rule of democracy. During the proceedings, one could see that some congressmen were objective, some were emotional. It came to a point where pro-impeachment congressmen were already playing with the emotions of the filipino people as their strategy in making their point. I give my salute to Congressman Villafuerte for his clear and unbiased presentation of facts and jurisprudence made by the supreme court. I give my salute to Congressman Cayetano for doing his best in trying to create an image of what is right in his own way. Judging from what we have heard and seen, it is the rule of law that must prevail. It is the standards of law which is by practice, referred to jurisprudence made by the supreme court that must be followed. These standards and rules of the game, however frail, must prevail. It may be wrong in the opinion of some congressmen. It may be right through the opinion of majority of the congressmen. However, democracy follows one rule, the opinion of the majority rules. Anyone who has a clear conscience and good faith in what he believes in, is right in what he feels is right. As Human beings, we must however realize that our freedom cannot be absolute. No one is an island, no one stands alone. We live in a society of democracy. We live in a society protecting the belief and welfare of the majority. Let us respect each other. The House of Congress must be a venue for the rule of law. As lawmakers, we can not afford to project ourselves as law breakers. Let us be gracious in accepting these realities.
