VM Alvin leads blood letting activity
Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez leads volunteer blood donors during a blood letting activity conducted by the City Government of Dagupan, Philippine National Red Cross Pangasinan Chapter, Spectrum Communications Group and the Rotary Club of Dagupan. City Health Officer Leo Carbonell, who was instrumental in the success of the activity, wrote all city hall department heads, with the approval of Mayor Benjamin Lim, to seek their assistance in encouraging their city government employees to join the blood letting activity. Dr. Carbonell also took charge in the screening of possible donors. Philippine National Red Cross Pangasinan Chapter Administrator Florame Magalong did the blood extraction, and the Spectrum Communication Group led private sector volunteers. Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez represented the SP and the Rotary Club of Dagupan, as its president, together with RCD Secretary Edwin Aguirre and Councilor Alex De Venecia. It was the first time that the vice mayor donated blood. Ask how he felt, he said: “I feel good! I feel light!” The vice mayor also took the opportunity to contact Sen. Richard Gordon, PNRC chairman, through his executive assistant Gwen Pang to greet him a Happy Birthday and inform him that his blood donation is in the Chairman's honor. The staff of the Sangguniang Panlungsod also trooped at the City Museum where the blood letting was conducted. They took advantage of the opportunity to give blood. At the museum, Chester Norbert Pidalgo of San Quintin, Pangasinan was waiting for 10 bags of type 'A' blood for a dengue victim. The vice mayor then called the Public Order and Safety Office for possible volunteers with type 'A'. It was positive for one donor, and for another donor from the SP. Luckily, with the SPECTRUM volunteers, POSO, SP and other volunteers from the city government, the ten bags of type ‘A’ blood, which was badly needed, were completed. Thank you, Red Cross for the opportunity. Vice Mayor Fernandez said: “The experience of donating blood was indeed a worthwhile and painless experience, which could encourage for a repeat donation worth campaigning to other possible volunteers that may be just afraid of donation because of fear of pain or side effects. “The experience is self gratifying and has the fulfillment of having the potential to save lives,” Vice Mayor Fernandez said.
